Sam, mum & I went on a sailing boat called Excelsior for a week with some people from HERO'S. It was an old trawler & we slept where the fish would have been stored!
We had to put the sails up and down and pull the bow spit out and in. The bow spit is a long pole that comes out at the front it helps the boat to keep level.
We also had to cook and clean for 16 people in a tiny galley. It was hard work & very hot.
We set of from Ipswich on the Saturday and went to Harwich, we stayed there Saturday night and on Sunday we stayed there for the day because there was a festival on. Some sea shanty singers came on board our boat & lots of people came to look at it.
Monday we went south to Brightlingsea and put the anchor down near Mersea Island. We did a treasure hunt and had to find something blue, a pretty shell, a pretty feather & an interesting object. You had to make a story about the object, we found a crab. We had anchored in the bay the tide was in when we went to bed, in the night the skipper pulled in the anchor because we were going to end up running aground if we didn't move. I didn't hear a thing I was fast asleep.
Tuesday we went back up to Harwich for the night and while we were there we climbed the rigging!
We left Harwich really early 5:45 !!!! and went up even further north to Lowestoft and we arrived there at 4pm so it was a really long journey!!!!
There are fountains near the port, we all went to play in them, I got knocked down by someone. I hit the floor and blacked out, I couldnt get up, Mum came & got me but I was in shock, shaking & really cold. I went to have a warm shower and a few days later I had bruises everywhere! We also stayed there Thursday night.
Friday morning we had to clean everything!! so that was hard work! By the time we were leaving-Friday afternoon I was so tired i wanted to get back but i really want to stay longer ( hard to explain - and understand!)
I would love to go again.
